Salt Marshes are a toxic swamp region ruled by House Dres in Deshaan District, Morrowind.

2015 concept art from 10Kaziem depicting the Salt Marshes, with the Arnesian Jungle in the background.

The marshes form the transition between the irrigated salt flats of the Deshaan Plains and the treacherous Arnesian Jungle. This is where the waters in the Salt Washes caverns underneath the Deshaan Plains come to the surface. However, due to the salts embedded in the soil, the the water is mostly in the form of toxic chloride and brine pools that make footing dangerous. Prolonged exposure to the water burns the skin. Further to the south of the region, towards the Arnesian Jungle, the water is less acrid, but equally dangerous to drink. Salt is finer and more granular here than on the Plains and reedy grasses dominate. From a distance, the salt marshes are covered by a sort of haze; the air above the marshes is humid and filled with ferocious bugs.

Settlements in the Salt Marshes are relatively closed-off and monolithic to keep out the poisonous morass and bugs. Canton settlements have tall barrier walls for this reason. For the same reason, much of the transport here is done high above the ground with skyrenders. Recently, treacherous paths have begun to spread southwards through the Salt Marshes into the Arnesian Jungle, slaver roads that are often used by the raiding parties of House Dres.

Settlements
