Map of the Reach (ingame)

The Reach is the westernmost of Skyrim's Holds, sharing a border with Hammerfell Province and High Rock Province. Within Skyrim, the Reach borders Haafinheim, White Hold, and Falkreath Hold to the north, east, and southeast, respectively. King Barda the Builder rules the Reach from Elfstone Keep in the capital city of Markarth Side.

Geography and Regions

The Reach enjoys a far more hospitable climate than the other eight Holds of Skyrim. For this reason, the Reach is often considered the breadbasket of the Province. Most of the Reach's agricultural exports are grown in the Lorchwuir Heath and Midkarth regions, which are the most conducive to large-scale agriculture.

Between the densely settled Lorchwuir Heath and Midkarth regions lies the less populous Vorndgad Forest, a dense, hilly woodland. After a century of Redguard rule over the Lorchwuir Heath, the roads through Vorndgad Forest have largely fallen into disrepair. Most of the Reach's trade in modern times is conducted via boat along the placid waters of the Karth River.

To the west of the Karth basin lie the plateaus of the Druadach Highlands, a sparsely-inhabited upland region dominated by the native Reachmen tribes. There are no actively-maintained roads in the Highlands, aside from the well-patrolled route to Dragonstar.

East of the Karth River's eastern fork is the Sundered Hills region, a gravelly expanse of hills that has taken heavy damage from droughts in recent years. Lake Ilinalta occasionally overflows its banks through channels in the southern part of the Sundered Hills, releasing its outflow into the Karth.

Along its northern and northeastern borders, the Reach also includes portions of the Falkheim, Kilkreath Mountains, Solitude Forest, and Valstaag Highlands regions.

Landmarks

Unlike the rest of Skyrim, the Reach has no great snowcapped peaks, and only one "mountain" worthy of the name: Vornberg. Several more large landforms in the Druadach Highlands are worth noting, however. From north to south, these mesas are called Coimeaden, Darvacriag mesa, Briag Cnoss, and Samlach Cnoss. These four plateaus make up much of the Druadach Highlands, and are difficult to access from below.

Far to the north, the island of Tsunholm in Lake Skirling is also part of the Reach, and serves as a moot-site for the selection of Reach Kings.
